PPF vs Ceramic Coating: Which Does a Melbourne Daily Driver Need?

PPF vs Ceramic Coating: the Short Answer for a Daily Driver

Paint protection film and ceramic coating solve different problems. PPF is a clear urethane layer about 0.2 mm thick that physically absorbs stone chips, scuffs and car park scrapes. A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer a few microns thick that bonds to the clear coat, adds gloss and makes the car far easier to wash. Neither replaces the other. If your daily driver spends its week on the Monash, EastLink or the Eastern Freeway, film on the front end comes first. If it lives in a garage and does short suburban runs, a coating alone covers most of what you will notice.

Most of the cars leaving our Mitcham workshop run both: film across the front third where stones land, coating over every panel including the film. Here is what each product does, where each one fails, and how to decide from your own driving.

What paint protection film actually does

Paint protection film is thermoplastic urethane cut to fit each panel of your model, applied over the factory paint and finished with a top coat that heals light scratches when warmed. The STEK DYNOshield film we fit is 8 mils thick, roughly 0.2 mm, and is warranted for ten years against delamination, yellowing, bubbling and cracking according to STEK’s 2026 product specification. That thickness is the whole point: a stone that would chip clear coat lands in the film instead.

Film stops impact damage: chips on the bonnet and bumper, door edge nicks, boot ledge scuffs from prams and shopping, fingernail marks around door handles. It also takes the bird droppings and bug acid that etch bare paint, and when it has done its job it comes off with heat and leaves the original paint intact. What film does not do is make the car glossier or quicker to wash; its surface collects the same road grime as paint. Coverage runs from $180 for headlight film to $5980 for every painted panel.

What a ceramic coating actually does

A ceramic coating is a liquid silica based polymer that cures into a hard, glass like layer bonded to the clear coat. It fills the microscopic pores that make paint grabby, so water sheets off, road film releases with a rinse and UV stops dulling the colour. Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light, the standard coating on most of our cars, carries a five year Gtechniq guarantee. Crystal Serum Ultra, the flagship, carries a nine year guarantee and is released only to Gtechniq Accredited Detailers, because a botched application has to be sanded off.

A coating protects against chemistry: water spots from Melbourne bore water, sap, brake dust, sunscreen handprints, wash induced swirls. It does not stop a stone. A gravel strike at freeway speed goes straight through a layer a few microns thick and into the paint. Preparation is most of the job: our $980 Gtechniq ceramic coating includes full decontamination and a single stage machine polish, and a professionally applied coating protects for two to five years in normal Melbourne use.

PPF vs ceramic coating: the differences that matter

Which one a Melbourne daily driver needs

The decision is about how the car lives, not which product is better.

Freeway commuter. Forty minutes on the Monash or EastLink each way means gravel from trucks and roadworks, and it lands almost entirely on the bonnet, front bumper, guards and mirrors. Film on the front end first. A coating is the second purchase.

School run and shopping centre car parks. Speeds are low, so chips are rare, but door edges, door cups and the boot ledge cop trolleys, kids and bags. A wear and tear film pack on those contact points plus a coating over the car matches the damage this car actually sees.

Garaged, driven gently. A coating alone earns its keep: less wash time, colour that stays deep, resale condition held. Film is optional insurance.

Dark versus light colours. Black and dark metallics show swirls and water spots, which is coating territory. White and silver hide swirls but show every chip, which is film territory. Pearl White Teslas are the textbook case: soft, thin, water based factory paint that chips within months on a freeway commute, which is why our Tesla page puts film first.

Electric cars. An EV often carries 400 kg more than its petrol equivalent, and heavier cars throw stones harder. Add soft low solvent paint and film moves up the list for any EV that leaves the suburbs.

Lease car. Film peels back to factory paint and a coating simply wears, so both are safe on a car you hand back.

Why most daily drivers end up with both

Film and coating are designed to layer. Film goes on the impact panels first, then the coating goes over the whole car including the film. The film handles the stones, the coating makes every panel, filmed or not, behave the same in the rain and rinse clean in the same wash. Adding a ceramic coating over DYNOshield at fitting time costs $650.

The order matters because film has to bond to bare, decontaminated paint; a coating applied first would have to be polished off before film could go on. New car protection packages are built in this sequence: Pack 4 at $4090 covers the bonnet, front bumper and front guards in film, coats the rest of the car with Crystal Serum Ultra and adds window tinting, all before the car has seen a freeway. If both is not in this year’s budget, buy in the order your driving dictates; a coating can go over existing film at any point.

What each option costs in Mitcham

Current figures from our service pages. Every job is quoted fixed before booking.

  • Headlight protection film: from $180.
  • Wear and tear PPF pack (door cups, door edges, boot ledge): from $380.
  • Front end PPF pack (bonnet, front bumper, guards, mirrors, headlights): quoted by model, about two days in the workshop.
  • Full car clear PPF: up to $5980, about a week.
  • Full car Gtechniq ceramic coating with decontamination and single stage polish: $980.
  • Ceramic coating over PPF at fitting time: $650.
  • New car protection packages: Pack Essential $1090, Pack 1 $1390, Pack 2 $1690, Pack 3 $1990, Pack 4 $4090.

A front end in film depends on bonnet and bumper size, so a Model Y and a Mazda CX-5 price differently. Call 1800 985 880 with the model and colour.

Living with film and coating

Both have a curing window: keep the car dry for seven days after film and 48 hours after a ceramic coating. After that the routine is the same for both: touchless pre rinse, pH neutral shampoo, two buckets, a clean microfibre dry, and no brush car washes. Film gets a complimentary inspection in the first month, and the Gtechniq guarantee stays valid with an annual inspection at our workshop. The full routine is on our aftercare page.

Questions owners ask

Is PPF or ceramic coating better for a daily driver?

Depends where the damage comes from. Freeway kilometres mean stone chips, and only PPF stops those. Short suburban trips mean swirls and water spots, which a ceramic coating handles. Film on the front end with a coating over the car is what most Melbourne daily drivers end up with.

Can I put a ceramic coating over PPF?

Yes, and it is the normal order. Film first on the impact panels, coating over everything including the film. Over DYNOshield it costs $650 at fitting time.

Does a ceramic coating stop stone chips?

No. A coating is microns thick and protects against UV, staining, water spots and wash marring. A stone at 100 km/h goes through it into the paint. Stopping stones is a job for film about 0.2 mm thick.

Do I need PPF if I only drive in the suburbs?

Full front film is usually overkill for a car that never sees a freeway. Suburban cars suffer door edge, door cup and boot ledge damage instead, and the wear and tear pack from $380 covers exactly those spots.

Which lasts longer, PPF or ceramic coating?

Film. DYNOshield carries a ten year warranty. Crystal Serum Light is guaranteed for five years and Crystal Serum Ultra for nine, and in practice a coating protects for two to five years in Melbourne depending on how it is washed.
