Cut and Polish Melbourne

Cut and Polish in Melbourne

A cut and polish removes the swirls, water spots and dull oxidised patches that make paint look tired, then polishes it back to a deep gloss. At Liquid R it is done by machine, in stages, under inspection lights, by a team that knows how little clear coat a modern car has to spare. Machine polishing starts from $850, and heavier correction is quoted after we have seen the paint.

Most cars take one to three days, depending on the condition of the paint and how far you want to go. Call 1800 985 880 or text 0483 930 888 and book an inspection at our Mitcham workshop.

What a Cut and Polish Is

The cut uses a more abrasive compound to level the clear coat around defects. The polish refines that surface back to full gloss. Done properly, it is the same job detailers call paint correction, and it is what turns a swirled car into one that looks new in daylight.

Staged, Not Brutal

We start with the lightest cut that shows a result, map the deeper defects, and work only those spots harder before refining the whole panel. Cutting a full panel hard to chase two scratches is how paint gets thin, and thin clear coat is a problem no polish can fix. Our guide to what a good cut and polish looks like explains how to judge the work.

What It Removes

Wash swirls from brush car washes, mineral rings from sprinklers and summer rain, oxidised patches where UV has had years to work, and the fine marks of a hundred car park doors. Dark colours show all of these, and most look far worse than they are. Our washing dos and don’ts help stop them coming back.

What It Cannot Fix

A scratch you can catch a fingernail in has gone through the clear coat and needs paint, not polish. Stone chips are the same. We tell you which defects will come out at inspection, rather than promising a result the paint cannot give. Stone chips are a job for PPF once the paint is repaired.

How Long It Takes

A machine polish to lift gloss can be done in a day. Multi-stage correction on neglected paint takes two to three days. We would rather keep the car an extra morning than hand back a panel that was rushed under the lights. Why the time is worth it: the benefits of a premium detail.

Cut and Polish Before Selling

Buyers price what they see. A corrected, cleaned car photographs better and negotiates better, and the work usually costs less than the first price drop a tired car takes. Tell us it is a sale prep and we spend the effort where inspection eyes go first. See how detailing changes a car’s look.

Seal It Afterwards

Freshly corrected paint is bare. Protect it while it is perfect: a ceramic coating, which starts at $980 including single stage correction, or film on the panels that take stone chips. Correcting without sealing means paying for the same finish twice. Then avoid the common mistakes after a coating.

Correction Before PPF or Coating

Film and coatings both lock in whatever is underneath. That is why older cars booked for PPF or a coating are corrected first. New cars usually need only a light polish after decontamination. Older cars are covered in classic car detailing.

Indoors, Under Proper Lights

Correction happens in our indoor bays at Mitcham, lit for inspection so every defect is visible while we work. Outdoor and mobile polishing hides swirls in bright sun and leaves holograms that show up later. Choosing a detailer? Read what to look for.

Dark Paint Shows Everything

Black, deep blue and rich reds like Mazda Soul Red Crystal show every swirl and water spot in the sun. These colours gain the most from a cut and polish, and they are the ones most worth sealing afterwards. Our article on protecting dark cars covers what to do afterwards.

Basic, Deluxe or Premium

Basic is a decontamination wash and interior clean. Deluxe adds machine polish and interior protection. Premium is multi-stage correction and protection on every surface. We confirm the inclusions on your quote after seeing the car.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you book. Anything else, call 1800 985 880.

How much is a cut and polish in Melbourne?

Machine polishing at Liquid R starts from $850. Multi-stage correction on heavily marked paint is quoted after inspection, because the work depends on what the paint needs.

How long does a cut and polish take?

A one-stage machine polish is about a day. Multi-stage correction takes two to three days.

Will a cut and polish remove scratches?

Swirls and shallow scratches in the clear coat come out. Scratches deep enough to catch a fingernail, and stone chips, go through the clear coat and need paint repair.

Is a cut and polish the same as paint correction?

Yes. Cut and polish is the common Australian name for machine paint correction: a cutting stage to level defects followed by a polishing stage to restore gloss.

Should I coat the car after a cut and polish?

It is the best time to. A ceramic coating locks in the corrected finish and makes it far easier to keep. Coating on bare paint starts at $980 including single stage correction.
