Boat Paint Protection

Boat Paint Protection in Melbourne

Gelcoat has a harder life than car paint: UV all day on open water, salt drying onto it and stone spray off the trailer on the way home. Once gelcoat oxidises it goes chalky, and it does not recover on its own. We correct and protect trailer boats at our Mitcham workshop, with ceramic for hulls and film for the panels that cop the abuse. Call 1800 985 880 or text 0483 930 888 to talk through your boat. There are dedicated guides for Tesla and EV protection.

Gelcoat Is Not Paint

Gelcoat is pigmented resin, more porous than automotive clear coat, and it chalks as UV breaks it down. That oxidation needs machine correction before any protection goes on, otherwise you are sealing a dull surface under a clear layer. We have written the same guidance for the Tesla Model S and supercar protection.

Hull Ceramic Coating

A marine grade ceramic coating bonds to corrected gelcoat and keeps salt, scum lines and UV from getting their teeth in. Wash-downs after a day on the bay drop from an hour of scrubbing to a rinse and wipe. The same work is set out for the Porsche 911 and Ferrari.

Trailer Road Damage

The trip to the ramp is often harder on a hull than the water is. Towing throws stones at the bow and the leading chines, and paint protection film on those strike zones takes the chips a bare hull would keep. The same work is set out for the BMW M cars and Mercedes.

UV and Colour Fade

Australian sun fades coloured gelcoat fast, and dark hulls show it worst. A ceramic layer absorbs the abuse that would otherwise chalk the surface, keeping colour depth for seasons instead of one summer. There are dedicated guides for Audi and Toyota.

Ramp and Jetty Rub

Hulls pick up scrapes from jetties, ramp rollers and careless fenders long before they hit anything serious. Film on the rub-prone sections of the bow and gunwale line acts as a sacrificial layer that replaces cheaply. Separate guides cover Mazda.

Oxidation Correction

Chalky, faded gelcoat usually cuts back beautifully with the right compounds and a machine, the marine equivalent of paint correction. We assess how far gone the surface is before quoting, since gelcoat thickness varies boat to boat.

Trailer Boats at the Workshop

We work on trailerable boats at our Cook Road workshop in Mitcham: tinnies, half cabins, ski boats and centre consoles on their trailers. If it tows legally, it fits. Larger vessels are assessed case by case.

Quoted Boat by Boat

Boats vary too much for a price table: hull size, gelcoat condition and how much correction is needed all move the number. Send photos and dimensions through our contact page and we will come back with a firm quote.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you book. Anything else, call 1800 985 880.

Can you fix gelcoat that has gone chalky?

Usually, yes. Oxidised gelcoat machine polishes back to gloss provided enough material remains. We check condition and thickness first, then correct and coat in the one booking so the fresh surface is protected immediately.

Does ceramic coating work below the waterline?

We coat above the waterline where UV and salt do their damage. Antifoul is a different system for a different job and we leave it to the marine yards. The two coexist happily on the same hull.

How do I get a price?

Send hull length, gelcoat colour and a few photos in decent light through the contact page. Every boat is quoted individually because condition drives the work, and we would rather quote straight than average it.

Will salt water strip the coating?

No. Cured ceramic is chemically bonded and salt sits on top of it, which is the point: rinse the boat after each outing and the salt leaves nothing behind. The coating lasts seasons with basic care.
